Bikini

Bikini

The history books tell us that the invention of the modern bikini is attributed to Louis Réard (a French engineeer) and Jacques Heim (fashion designer) in Paris in 1946 and exhibited at a Paris fashion show at Piscine Molitor on July 5th the same year. The garment took the form of a string bikini with a g-string back. It is said that the name was taken from Bikini Atoll, the nuclear weapon test site in the Marshall Islands which occured just a few days earlier. The name was chosen perhaps to reflect the explosion of excitement that the garment would cause when released on the world..

Bikini-style swimwear existed centuries prior to the first official bikini. In fact there are many references to bikini type garments in Roman artwork.
